Fiction Flings #1

Whenever I read books, there are times when I can't help myself but develop an admiration for a male character.  Call it a crush, if you may.  Here's what I call my "Fiction Flings", it has two vampires, a Fairy Prince, a Nephilim and a Divergent.

LESTAT

I am a fan of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles.  I first saw the movie Interview with a Vampire before I read the novel.  I didn't like Lestat in that book (maybe, we all didn't), but I like the idea of vampires so I read The Vampire Lestat.  It was there that I began to like his character.  Actually, Lestat is not just a crush.  I have deep respect and admiration for him.  I find him very smart and sophisticated (of course, he's French!).  I admire that he is a rebel, that he doesn't want to play by the rules.  It takes a lot of guts to break vampire rules since you'll be bringing upon yourself the ire of the vampires all over the world (remember his concert?).

As the chronicles progressed, Lestat's character evolved.  He did not remain the Brat Prince of Darkness that he was.  In the Tale of the Body Thief, he agreed to body swapping with the body thief because he wanted to feel what it's like to be human again (I know he raped someone during the first hour of being human... baby steps?).  Starting from Memnoch the Devil, Lestat was in search for the role vampires play in this world.  He wanted to know if they are forever damned or there is hope for their salvation.  So you see, Lestat matured and, I think, became a better being.

EDWARD CULLEN

When I first read about him in Twilight, I immediately had a crush on him.  I think he's sweet.  I actually found it sweet when he confessed to Bella that he watches her from her bedroom window at night.  He has this aura of mystery (naturally, since he is a vampire).  I find it charming when he smiles or secretly laughs over something Bella said or did that he finds funny.  I like that he's protective.  I like to feel secure when I'm with the guy I'm dating.  Like I know he will always protect me from anything or anyone.  That's how I see Edward.  I think he will always be there when I need him, my own Knight in a Shiny Silver Volvo.

However, he tends to be overprotective some times.  I don't like that about him.  If he's my boyfriend, I think he won't let me try new stuff.  Like if I would want to go bungee jumping, I think he won't let me.  I would want to feel secure and be protected but I also would want to try things that are out of my comfort zone.  Also, Edward can be too melodramatic.  He's a bit emo for my taste.  I don't like a guy who gets upset over the smallest things.  I don't want my boyfriend to be the drama queen in our relationship.

PRINCE ASH

Ash is a prince in every sense of the word.  He is noble, gallant, loyal and not to mention handsome.  He has conviction and fights for what or who he believes in.

Ash can be cold and unemotional since he grew up in the Unseelie Court.  He is taught that having feelings makes one weak.  But I don't take that against him.  What can you expect having Queen Mab for a mother?  Despite this, Ask succumbed to emotions and fell in love.

And Ash in love is a true knight indeed.  He made a promise that he would follow Meghan "to the end of the world, to protect her from all threats, including my own kin, and to die for her if called to do so. x x x and would have to gladly served this girl, this mortal who had captured my heart, until the last breath left in my body." *sigh* Isn't this what every girl wants?  Someone who will stand by you through hell and back, someone who will make you feel secure (emotionally and physically), someone who will love and take care of you for the rest of your life.

Ash is not all talk.  He's a guy who says what he means and means what he says.  He made a covenant that he would find a way for him and Meghan to be together and he did!  Even if sacrificing his own immortality in the process.  It is true that when someone wants to be with you, there is nothing that would drive him away but if someone doesn't, nothing will make him stay.

TOBIAS a.k.a. FOUR

I like Four (there's a nice ring to it that Tobias, right?) because he's the kind of guy who stands up for those who cannot defend themselves.  In Divergent, he was strict in training the initiates who came from other factions but when a leader of Dauntless was bullying them or when some of the initiates were tormenting the others, he readily stepped up for them.  He was always looking out for Tris.

Even though he is the top of his class when he was an initiate, he did not brag about it.  I like that in a guy.  He is humble although there is a reason for him to brag.  He knows his capabilities yet he doesn't flaunt them.

WILL HERONDALE

I liked Will instantly when I read about him in Clockwork Angel.  I like a guy who acts tough but is really such a softee.  Since you would not expect him to make grand gesture of love or affection, it will be very sweet of him when he does something out of character.

I knew he really liked Tessa when towards the end of Clockwork Angel he thought she was wounded.  They shared a "moment" but Will, knowing his so-called curse, didn't say anything.  I could feel his agony that he wants to tell Tessa how he feels but he is concerned that she will be affected by his curse.

My heart melted upon reading the prologue of Clockwork Prince when he asked Mol for a potion that would make one stop loving another.  Mol said that it is east to make a girl hate him and that he doesn't need her help on it.  When she vanished, Will said, "Not for her, for me..."  I wanted to hug and comfort him at that moment.

Then there was this time in Clockwork Prince when he and Tessa went to the masquerade ball at the Lockwood's and they were in a balcony, he said to her, "I have wanted to do this, every moment of every hour of every day that I have been with you since the day I met you."  I swear I would have swooned if Will told that to me!

I like Will because he can be unpredictable.  You'll never guess what he will do next.  I think I will really enjoy his company.  Also, I love a guy who loves to read especially when he loves to read more than I do!  And Will is like that.  He can even quote lines or passages from the books that he has read. *sigh*

I got brokenhearted when he confessed to Tessa everything - his curse, his feelings - but it was too late because Jem already proposed to her and she accepted.  I wanted to tell Will that I am available and that he love me instead!  I got teary-eyed when he had to let Tessa go because of her engagement to Jem, "You promise me that you love him.  Enough to marry him and make him happy. x x x Then, if you love him, please, Tessa, don't tell him what I just told you.  Don't tell him that I love you."  It takes a lot of courage to say that.  That's what makes Will such a great guy.
